This project is unbelievably difficult. The hardest years for me were 1979 to 1983. That probably says something terrible about my character. I'm trying hard to focus on stories, which helps add focus to this project. But it is really challenging.

I love this idea. Very ambitious.

I would find this really hard, I think, because of the 'too many options' problem. Some of my favorite music in the world came out between 1973 and 1979 (Genesis, Yes, Elvis Costello..), and there is a great deal of it. Plus of course there's all the other popular music from those years too.

Using some of my touchstones in the years when I was really digging them instead might be the way around that. But then I'd be foregoing all the awesome other songs from that year. And so forth.

I would be tempted to cheat for many of the years and branch out the choices, e.g. have a '1989 jazz song' and a '1989 pop song' and a...

Discipline is hard; I resist it.

I hope it's fun! I'm staring at my 1972 pick right now, and I'm already starting to regret this project. :)

Two more for you:

* longform.org - Also curated, like Give Me Something to Read, but the editors have a bias that may or may not appeal to you. (They have written thoughtfully about their biases somewhere, but I can't seem to find it now.)

* longreads.com - I don't tend to follow this one as closely, as my Instapaper queue seems to always be plenty long. But occasionally I go here and find good stuff.

Both have Twitter accounts (@longformorg and @longreads), too.
