Both Pockets

June 3rd, 2004

The Gadflyer reports on Bush’s new rules about overtime, which are set to go into effect in August 2004. These new rules will reclassify millions of employees as “management” without changing either the nature of their work or their pay. And since they will be management, they will be exempt from rules requiring employers to pay extra for extra hours worked. Even worse, the new classification scheme will make it more difficult for unions to organize workers.

Unfortunately, with the media’s and Congress’ attention focused elsewhere, it is unlikely that Congress will take action to overturn these new rules before August.

Worth it

If you aren’t familiar with The Center for Economic and Policy Research, you may want to browse their website a bit. Funded by several center/left foundations, the Center’s mission is to promote informed public debate about contemporary social, political and economic issues. The Center’s white papers, columns and press releases are worth reading for an informed, provacative tonic to the vacuousness of the current U.S. media.
