FY2007 Boondoggle

I have not yet paid much attention to Bush’s proposed FY 2007 budget, but it’s starting to look like I (and you, and you, and you, and you, and you) had better. Buried among what I’m sure are other outrages is legislation to sell off 300,000 acres of National Forest Service land.

This sale will provide money for states with a lot of national forest land — such states have lower tax bases, so Federal government helps them fund schools, roads and other kinds of infrastructure development. The Feds are now having trouble funding these subsidies because of their gross fiscal mismanagement. Proceeds from the proposed sale will be used to fund these subsidies.

Read that again — the Federal government is proposing that we sell our land to fund an ongoing program. That’s like refinancing your house to pay for child care expenses or to buy groceries. It’s a bad, bad idea because it reduces your assets without creating wealth.

Was taking Sadaam out worth this?
