Playlist of my life

In a couple of weeks, I’ll be celebrating my 40th birthday.  I’m a bit conflicted about it, but not in an angsty way — more in a reflective way.  As part of my personal celebration, I’m going to share the “playlist of my life” with you.  Starting tomorrow, I’m going to write about one song for every year of the past 40 years.

The songs I’ve picked capture something about that year or era or that time of my life.  They aren’t necessarily from the year I’ve chosen them for.  Sometimes they are from much earlier.  It was difficult for me to choose songs for some years, either because I had too many options (1981) or none at all (1978).  I used different methods for picking songs in different decades.  For example, picking songs for the first half of the 1970s was a fundamentally different challenge than for the first half of the 1990s.

I’m embarrassed by some of the songs I’ve picked and excited about others.   I’m probably revealing too much about myself to the world by doing this.  I’m not always comfortable writing or talking about music because I don’t think I have the appropriate vocabulary.  But I’m doing this anyway because putting together the initial list of songs was fun.

Oooo, this will be fun to read! Great idea.

I hope it’s fun! I’m staring at my 1972 pick right now, and I’m already starting to regret this project. :)

I love this idea. Very ambitious.

I would find this really hard, I think, because of the ‘too many options’ problem. Some of my favorite music in the world came out between 1973 and 1979 (Genesis, Yes, Elvis Costello..), and there is a great deal of it. Plus of course there’s all the other popular music from those years too.

Using some of my touchstones in the years when I was really digging them instead might be the way around that. But then I’d be foregoing all the awesome other songs from that year. And so forth.

I would be tempted to cheat for many of the years and branch out the choices, e.g. have a ‘1989 jazz song’ and a ‘1989 pop song’ and a…

Discipline is hard; I resist it.

This project is unbelievably difficult. The hardest years for me were 1979 to 1983. That probably says something terrible about my character. I’m trying hard to focus on stories, which helps add focus to this project. But it is really challenging.
