Product Placement Watch

I’ve noticed references to Fresca, by name and by sight on two television shows lately: Veronica Mars and The Daily Show. Veronica Mars is no surprise, because that show is widely known as a product placement whore — but what about The Daily Show? Do you think that is a paid placement? In light of the VM sighting, I’m finding Stewart’s gracious offering of Fresca to George Tenet suspicious. Maybe this has been going on for a long time and I never noticed, but I find it disappointing nonetheless.

I’ve noticed more than a few references to Fresca on TV, but it’s usually used in a negative way, to say “Fresca is so awful that it’s all we have to offer you.”

    Mountain Dew or Crab Juice?

I’m usually pretty hip to product placement, but when I saw Jon Stewart offer George Tenet a Fresca - and Tenet opened and drank it - I thought perhaps it was somehow known to Stewart that Fresca was Tenet’s favorite drink. Call me naive.
